newterra teams up with Queen’s University on green technology

Brockville, ON – (February 27, 2013) New research involving newterra water filtration technology is exploring whether it can provide renewable energy to help power wastewater treatment systems. Funded by a FedDev Ontario grant, Queen’s University researcher, Bruce Anderson is evaluating the integration of newterra’s MicroClear™ flat sheet membranes with the current system as an effective method for increasing biogas production generated from the treatment of wastewater.

“The $68,798 in FedDev Ontario funding will allow us to improve filtration at wastewater plants and, more importantly, increase biogas production,” says Dr. Anderson, who worked with newterra to evaluate the technology.

The MicroClear ultrafiltration membranes involved in the research were developed by newterra – a global pioneer in water treatment that is based in Brockville. The wastewater and greywater treatment systems engineered and manufactured by the company are used around the world. Their technology is also installed at the Brockville Wastewater Services Facility, where they are part of the anaerobic digestion process. Anaerobic digestion is a bacterial process in which bacteria break down the solids captured or produced in the wastewater treatment process. This produces a mix of methane gas and carbon dioxide referred to as biogas.

“Queen’s is thrilled to be a partner in this initiative with newterra – another great example of how creative collaborations can support economic and social benefit, particularly in south-eastern Ontario,” says Steven Liss, VP, Research.

That enthusiasm is shared by newterra according to company President & COO, Robert Kennedy. “Our engineers and employees are devoted to bettering the environment through smart technology. This exciting work with Queen’s University is building on our collective knowledge base and will lead to water treatment solutions that are even more planet-friendly.”

The project is funded by FedDev Ontario’s Applied Research and Commercialization Initiative, to help small businesses access the research capacity of colleges and universities for engineering design, technology development, product testing and certification. The partnership is the result of the 2012 federally funded partnership initiative, managed by the Queen’s University Industry Partnerships team to support projects between small and medium businesses in Southern Ontario.

Global success fuels newterra expansion

Brockville, ON – (January 28, 2013) newterra, a leader in designing and building sustainable treatment systems for wastewater and groundwater, is expanding its MET Certified manufacturing capabilities in Brockville, Ontario. The growth at its Canadian operations is fueled by ongoing success internationally and in North America, and will allow newterra to increase the scale of its water treatment systems.

“This brings new municipal opportunities into our sights,” says newterra President, Robert Kennedy. “With our scalable technology, we can now build wastewater treatment plants that can address populations of 10,000 to 15,000 people. The expansion is also a boon to our core business of providing decentralized sewage and water treatment solutions for the resource sector, food and beverage industry, and private and municipal development.”

According to Kennedy, expanding their Lean manufacturing in Brockville continues the company’s philosophy of self-sufficiency. “Having direct control over all aspects of our production – from design and engineering to manufacturing – has been a competitive advantage and an important ingredient in our success. This additional capacity allows us to maintain our high quality standards and delivery commitments as we grow.”

newterra’s expansion into a facility adjacent to their current Brockville plant will add an additional 130,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing space, along with approximately 60 production, engineering and administrative staff over the next three years.

The company is receiving $410,000 from the 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation (CDC) for renovation, technology and training costs at the new facility. The balance will come from private investors and operating cash flow. It’s the largest single presentation to a company in the history of the CDC, which is funded by the Federal government to support economic develop in the region.
