newterra engineered and built a large-scale, modular plant to treat domestic wastewater for a copper mine and the surrounding community in Zambia, Africa. The pre-built system was deployed, installed and operational with minimal site work at the remote location and is designed to facilitate future expansion at the site.

Upon consideration of various options, our client selected newterra's modular Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) system for the site. The key factors in the choosing newterra for the project were the scalability and portability of our container-based solution. The 26-container system is comprised of discrete, 3-container treatment trains that can be supplemented with additional trains if the mining community grows. If capacity requirements decrease, they can be removed and relocated to other projects elsewhere. The modular design also allows the entire treatment plant to be moved in the future without leaving any assets in the ground.  Equally important to making the mine a more sustainable operation is newterra's innovative MicroClear® UF membranes. They treat sewage to the high standards established by the World Health Organization (WHO), thus allowing reuse for irrigation, dust control and other applications, or direct discharge to the local river. The newterra system features sludge thickening and dewatering equipment that allows on-site management. The dry filter cakes could ultimately be use as fertilizer for local agriculture. The sophisticated system also incorporates newterra's advanced SiteLink telemetry for remote monitoring, control and trouble-shooting
