Filtration is a core technology that we utilize in many applications to remove a wide range of constituents. From multimedia to activated carbon to calcite, we have the media options and expertise to effectively and efficiently treat your water stream.

Filtration is a simple and highly effective technology used in many newterra water treatment systems for process and wastewater. Regardless of the media we select, the water that flows through these systems is generally the same. Feed water enters the filter vessel through an inlet valve and is sprayed out over a bed of the selected media. The water flows down through the bed and interacts with the media which removes or alters the targeted constituents. The filtered water enters the distributor system at the bottom of the vessel and travels up through the center riser tube from which it is then piped out of the vessel.
In applications other than pH adjustment, the media will trap solids which, over time, results in an increased pressure drop across the vessel. Upon reaching a preset level, the control system (or manual initiation) will trigger a backwash mode, reversing the direction of flow. Feed water travels down through the riser tube into the distributor and flows upward through the media bed. The velocity of the water releases the trapped particles which are sent to a drain. The system then goes into a rinse mode in order to set the media bed into a compact state for treatment to resume. The backwash cycle takes approximately 30 minutes.

Suspended solids can cause abrasion and damage to plumbing, valves and downstream equipment – as well as plugging filters and fouling RO membranes. They are also harmful to boilers. If present in feedwater streams, suspended solids can cause fouling and thermal efficiency losses. newterra multimedia filtration solutions and membrane filtration removes these abrasive elements down to 10 microns using carefully selected media, including anthracite, sand, garnet, fine gravel and coarse gravel.

Activated Carbon Filtration

Chlorine, Trace Organics, Color & Odor
The removal of chlorine from process water streams is particularly important given the irreparable damage it does to most RO membranes. It also has the potential to degrade plastics and composite materials. newterra activated carbon (GAC) filtration systems provide extremely effective chlorine removal. In certain applications, GAC filtration can be used for trace organics. Like chlorine, they affect the taste and odor of water – but can also be toxic and cause organic fouling of resins and membranes.

Iron Removal Filtration

Iron, Manganese, Hydrogen Sulfide, Other Metals
In addition to our newterra Deferum Iron Removal process, we also use conventional filtration for effective iron treatment. This destructive constituent quickly falls out of solution and sticks to surfaces causing scaling and fouling. It can also plug filters and plumbing and foul RO membranes. When in contact with boiler tubes, it causes fouling that inhibits heat transfer and boiler efficiency. These newterra systems also remove hydrogen sulphide, which has an objectionable odor and is highly corrosive and other metals that can compromise plumbing and RO membranes.

pH Adjustment Filtration

Treatment Targets: 

Increase pH
Our use of calcite as a sacrificial media is an effective way to increase the pH of water without adding chemicals. As acidic water flows down through this media in the vessel, it slowly dissolves the calcium carbonate, which increases the pH.
