The Client

The Church Road Transfer Station (CRTS) is located southwest of downtown Parksville, British Columbia in the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN). The facility receives organic waste, solid waste, recyclables, and construction/demolition waste from the general public and commercial haulers.

challenge

The CRTS’s expansion under the RDN’s Green Building Policy transformed it into a zero-waste facility. Incorporating integrated wastewater management and water conservation measures was essential in achieving LEED Gold certification. Engineering Consultant, AECOM, selected Newterra to supply a package Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to treat the on-site wastewater. Newterra ’s MBR system had to meet the effluent reuse requirements of the BC Environmental Management Act Municipal Sewage Regulation.

The 790 GPD (3m3/d) of reclaimed water – representing 100% of the WWTP effluent – is now suitable to be reused at the transfer station for toilet flushing, floor washing, and green roof irrigation.

Solution

Beyond meeting reuse requirements, Newterra ’s MBR system was selected based on its compact footprint, odor-free and silent operation. Other criteria in which the Newterra system rated very highly were its simple automated operation, minimal maintenance, low sludge production and low life cycle cost. The MBR package system also contributed up to six points toward the LEED Gold Certification. Housed entirely in a 40-ft modified shipping container, the system was delivered completely pre-assembled, pre-piped, pre-wired and pre-tested to allow installation and start-up in less than a month. It has been in operation since June 2010.

The 790 GPD (3 m3/d) Newterra MBR package system is entirely housed in a 40-ft modi ed high-cube shipping container – completely pre-assembled, pre-piped, pre-wired and pre-tested, ready for a quick site installation and start-up. The Newterra MBR package system is currently in operation. It was delivered on-site by end of May, 2010 and it has been in operation since 2010.
