Newterra Participates in one of nation's largest PFAS treatment facilities to Deliver PFAS‑Free Water to Over 100,000 Residents

In Wilmington, Delaware, Veolia North America teamed up with Newterra to address a pressing public health issue: PFAS contamination, often referred to as “forever chemicals.” At the Stanton Water Treatment Plant—serving more than 100,000 residents in New Castle County—this partnership has yielded a proactive, robust solution that stands out as a model in the fight for clean, equitable water.

A Community-Centered Approach to Clean Water

Prior to the upgrade, local water tests revealed PFAS levels reaching 29 parts per trillion (ppt)—a serious concern given the health risks these substances pose, including cancer, thyroid dysfunction, liver damage, and developmental issues in children Newterra+1. Recognizing the urgency, Veolia and Newterra sought not just regulatory compliance, but to restore public trust and protect vulnerable communities—especially households without access to home filtration systems Newterra+1.

Engineering Impact: Ahead of Schedule, Ahead of Standards

Newterra supplied 21 CP40K‑12 systems, totaling 42 pressure vessels, each twelve feet in diameter, supported by custom-designed lead‑lag valve racks Newterra+1. This system—able to treat up to 30 million gallons per day—reduced PFAS contamination to non‑detectable levels, hitting full operation a remarkable four years before the EPA’s 2029 compliance deadline Newterra+1.

Moreover, the modular design ensures media flexibility and future-readiness. A built-in pilot system allows for ongoing innovation and testing, ensuring adaptability to next-generation filtration technologies Newterra+1.

Delivering Health, Equity, and Sustainability

The project delivers clean, PFAS‑free drinking water to over 100,000 people—well ahead of regulatory demands Newterra+1. It also supports environmental equity: underserved communities, often unable to afford filtration systems, now gain access to safe water as a generational investment in public health Newterra+1.

Under Veolia’s broader “GreenUp” environmental transformation initiative, the Stanton plant embodies both ecological responsibility and community resilience. Its scalable, sustainable design primes it to serve as a blueprint for public–private collaborations tackling emerging contaminants Newterra+1.
