Waste-Energy Facility Expands Its Operations
A Spring Hill facility expands its operations to allow for an added 515 tons of daily capacity.
With an ever-growing population, a Waste-to-Energy facility in Spring Hill, FL needed to expand its operations to allow for an added 515 tons of daily capacity. They had to make sure that the equipment chosen for the expansion would produce a reliable source of high-purity boiler feed water to sustain its incineration process for energy production. Without proper demineralization, the facility risked operational disruptions and inefficiencies.
To address this, they chose to partner with Newterra to provide a custom Reverse Osmosis (RO) system with Demineralization, incorporating multimedia and cartridge filtration, a double-pass RO system, an Electrodeionization (EDI) unit, and a Clean-In-Place (CIP) system. This solution ensured a continuous supply of demineralized water, optimized plant performance and uninterrupted power generation.

CHALLENGE
The Waste-to-Energy facility in Spring Hill, Florida, faced a critical challenge as it expanded its operations. To sustain energy production, the facility required high-purity boiler feed water, necessitating a reliable demineralization solution. Without it, the facility’s incinerators could not effectively generate electricity, threatening operational continuity.
The client needed a solution that could seamlessly integrate with their existing infrastructure, maintain strict water quality standards, and support long-term operational efficiency—all within the constraints of a high-demand environment.
SOLUTION
After careful consideration, the client decided that Newterra’s custom Reverse Osmosis (RO) system with Demineralization, was the most cost-effective system that is designed to meet their stringent boiler feed water requirements. The system included Multimedia Filters (MMFs) for pre-treatment and removal of large particulates and Cartridge Filters for fine filtration to protect downstream equipment. To ensure high-quality water purification, with redundancy, a Double Pass RO System was included, along with a Clean-In-Place (CIP) System for efficient maintenance and prolonged equipment life. Finally, an Electrodeionization (EDI) Unit for continuous chemical-free demineralization.
Newterra’s tailored approach ensured that the system would reliably supply demineralized water, optimizing the plant’s efficiency while maintaining compliance with operational standards.
RESULTS
Newterra’s customized RO & Demineralization solution allowed the client to secure a reliable and efficient demineralization process, directly supporting their waste-to-energy operations.
With this robust, integrated system they can achieve uninterrupted power generation from a continuous supply of purified water to sustain incinerator operations and meet strict boiler feed water standards.
This case study highlights Newterra’s ability to provide scalable, high-performance water treatment solutions for industrial clients with mission-critical processes. Whether ensuring energy production or maintaining regulatory compliance, Newterra delivers the expertise and technology necessary for success.
